The Village at Orchard Ridge
Expansions and Renovations

The Village at Orchard Ridge Retirement Community
A National Lutheran Community
Winchester, Virginia

The project includes a new 100-unit independent living apartment building, 42 rental apartments, healthcare expansion, new fitness/wellness center with exercise spaces, natatorium, offices, and support areas, and new dining area and kitchen upgrades. The locations of the different aspects of the project were spread around the campus and involved expanding options for the continuum of care, resident amenities, and other enhancements.

The architecture of the new expansion carries forward the village feel of the original campus. Each element of the project required a nuanced design approach. For instance, the new apartments feature open plans, high ceilings, and large windows to provide abundant natural light and take advantage of views around the building. The healthcare expansion was conceived of as small households with public, more active spaces, and restful, private zones. Given the scope of the project, the design considerations included how to improve walking distances and way-finding throughout the community.

The project was designed and managed by Drew Kepley while a Principal at SFCS Inc., Architect of Record.
